The High Commission for the Development of Riyadh has installed a set of advanced safety systems at King Abdullah Road, particularly at its four tunnels. The tunnels were provided with a safety systems as per international specifications, including fire control, alarm, power control (in case of disruption of power) and air quality control (to detect poisonous gases). Besides there is a system to detect the level of visibility inside the tunnel. The fire control system involves four elements: fire alert sensors, sound alert devices, fixed and mobile extinguishing units, which are fed by a reservoir that has sufficient water for close to five hours of extinguishing operation. Also a ventilation system that measures the speed and quantity of air in the tunnel was installed. It involves fans that blow air toward traffic direction in both sides. These fans can be reversed to help extinguishing a fire. Monitoring of these systems will be through SCADA control system from the road command center. This is within a comprehensive traffic control system the ArRiyadh Development Authority (ADA) has begun implementing on King Abdullah Road at first, and will implement it all over the city in the future. __
