The General Authority for Civil Aviation (GACA) has completed the new Najran regional airport project and made arrangements to start operating it on the National Day. Dr. Faisal Bin Hamad Al-Suqair, Head of GACA, said the project is part of GACA's initiative to establish new-generation airports and upgrade Saudi airports' infrastructure. When designing the new airport, passengers' convenience and the increasing number of domestic travelers was taken into consideration. The development stems from the government's intention to cope with the fast developments in air transportation industry to deal with the growth in air travel. The new airport is an addition to the ones GACA started building recently, including Prince Abdul Muhsin Bin Abdul Aziz Regional Airport in Yanbu, Prince Sultan Bin Abdul Aziz Regional Airport in Tabuk, Prince Abdul Majid Bin Abdul Aziz Airport in Al-Ola and Bisha Airport. Al-Suqair visited the project and was appraised of the preparations for transferring operations to the new airport. He met with the team assigned to the transfer operation and listened to detailed explanation on the procedures and plans. The airport is capable of receiving wide-bodied aircrafts, and can operate international flights from and to neighboring countries with the capacity of about 1.4 million passengers per year at a rate of 15,000 flights.
