Galatasaray signs Spanish winger Albert Riera
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 04 - 09 - 2011

Turkish club Galatasaray has said that it has signed Spanish winger Albert Riera from Olympiakos on a four-year deal worth €3 million ($4.3 million).
Galatasaray said on its website the 29-year-old will be paid €2.7 million ($3.8 million) for the first year, €2.9 million ($4.1 million) for the second year and €3 million ($4.3 million) for each of the next two years, with an additional €7,500 ($10,650) fee per game.
The eight-time Spain international moved to Olympiakos from Liverpool last summer.
Galatasaray finished in eighth place last season, its worst result in years. The Istanbul-based club made major signings this summer, including Ivory Coast international Emmanuel Eboue, Uruguay's Fernando Muslera and Felipe Melo of Brazil.
Canada advances
In Argentina, Jevohn Shepherd scored 13 points and Jermaine Anderson weighed in with 11 as Canada beat Cuba 84-62 Friday to book a place in the second round of the Olympic qualifying tournament for the Americas. The defeat confirms Cuba's early elimination from the tournament after three straight losses.
Also in Group A, the Dominican Republic had a 79-74 win over Brazil.
In other Friday games, Esteban Batista led Uruguay with 24 points in a 77-61 win over Panama, and host Argentina beat Puerto Rico 81-74 in Group B.
The final first-round games will be played Saturday, when the 10 teams will be pared down to eight ahead of a second stage of round-robin matches.
The two eventual finalists earn places at the 2012 Olympics in London.
Forlan ruled out of Champions
Diego Forlan will be unable to play in the Champions League group stage for new club Inter Milan after featuring for Atletico Madrid in the Europa League before his move to Italy.
The Uruguayan striker played for Atletico against Norwegian outfit Stromsgodset in the third qualifying round of Europe's secondary club competition.
He played no part in the playoff tie against Vitoria Guimaraes at a time when he was in negotiations over a possible move to the San Siro, but UEFA rules state that his previous involvement means he cannot now play in Europe for Inter until the new year.
Inter — which is drawn in Group B along with CSKA Moscow, Lille and Trabzonspor — can still call on Giampaolo Pazzini, Diego Milito, Mauro Zarate and 18-year-old Dutchman Luc Castaignos as attacking options.
Forlan, 32, was signed late last month for $7.1m to replace Samuel Eto'o, who was sold to Anzhi Makhachkala in Russia.
