The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has praised the charity and peace initiatives of King Abdullah, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, particularly efforts to aid the Somali people and his stance on events taking place in Syria. Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, Secretary General of the OIC, told Okaz/Saudi Gazette recently that “The Kingdom, under the leadership of King Abdullah, takes the initiative to help the needy all over the Muslim World. King Abdullah is a sagacious and insightful leader.” Ihsanoglu said that the region is seeing efforts to reform political, economic and social conditions that have been in place for many years. He said that Syria's OIC membership can only be suspended by the organization's Council of Ministers. He called on the Syrian government to stop using force against civilian protesters. Ihsanoglu said the King cares for the people of Syria and has appealed to both sides to stop the bloodshed before the country descends into “chaos”. Ihsanoglu said that the Kingdom and its people have always donated generously to needy Muslims. “The campaign launched on Somalia is a shining example of Saudi generosity. May Allah the Almighty reward King Abdullah and his people for their good deeds!” He said that the OIC is making arrangements with the official authorities in the Kingdom to deliver donations to suffering Somalis. Ihsanoglu said leaders in the Muslim World need to approach events taking place in the region in a wise and prudent manner. He said the people want good government, the rule of law and more political participation. He reiterated the OIC position that the sovereignty of countries should be respected and that there should be no intervention by foreign powers. Ihsanoglu said the Palestinian cause is the first priority of the OIC. Its executive committee held several meetings to end the unjust siege of the Gaza Strip and deliver aid to the besieged Palestinians. We sent several food caravans to the Gaza Strip.” __
