David Price pitched eight crisp innings, B.J. Upton and Evan Longoria homered and the Tampa Bay Rays held the Boston Red Sox to three hits for the third straight game in a 4-0 win Wednesday. Price (11-10) struck out six and walked three before Kyle Farnsworth worked a perfect ninth. The combined shutout followed a day-night doubleheader in which James Shields and Jeff Niemann each pitched a complete game. Boston beat Shields in the opener 3-1 but Niemann struck out 10 in a 6-2 win in the nightcap. Athletics 6, Orioles 5: Kurt Suzuki hit two solo homers and right fielder David DeJesus cut down pinch-runner Blake Davis at the plate to end the game, preserving Oakland's victory. It was the second career multihomer game for Suzuki, who connected in the second and sixth against Alfredo Simon (3-6). Twins 6, Tigers 5: Justin Morneau's bases-loaded single in the ninth inning gave the Minnesota Twins a victory over the first-place Detroit Tigers. Indians 4, White Sox 1: Fausto Carmona allowed four hits over 81/3 innings and the Cleveland Indians beat the Chicago White Sox. The win kept Chicago from passing the Indians and moving into second place in the AL Central. Royals 5, Yankees 4: Alex Gordon hit a three-run home run, Billy Butler added a contested solo shot and the Kansas City Royals survived a harrowing ninth inning to beat the New York Yankees and avoid a three-game sweep. Astros down Cubs Matt Downs hit a go-ahead two-run single, Mark Melancon wriggled out of a jam in the ninth inning and the Houston Astros beat the Chicago Cubs 4-3 Wednesday to take the series between the worst teams in NL Central. Mets 7, Padres 3: David Wright hit a three-run homer and Angel Pagan had three RBIs as the New York Mets won their first series in San Diego in more than nine years. Phillies 9, Diamondbacks 2: Cliff Lee threw seven impressive innings, Wilson Valdez hit a tiebreaking two-run double in the seventh, and the Philadelphia Phillies beat Arizona to snap the Diamondbacks' seven-game winning streak. Lee (13-7) allowed two runs and three hits, striking out seven. The All-Star lefty has won four straight starts. Lee's 18-inning scoreless streak ended when Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-run homer for the NL West leaders. Reds 2, Nationals 1: Johnny Cueto pitched into the ninth inning and Joey Votto homered to lead the Cincinnati Reds to a victory over the Washington Nationals. Cardinals 7, Pirates 2: Allen Craig homered twice to break out of a slump and lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Giants 7, Braves 5: Matt Cain snapped his three-game losing streak with five-hit ball over eight innings, and the San Francisco Giants barely avoided another loss to Atlanta in the final at-bat, holding on for a victory over the Braves. Brewers 3, Dodgers 1: Zack Greinke won his fifth straight start and Jerry Hairston singled in two runs to lift the surging Milwaukee Brewers to a victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers for their 19th victory in 21 games.
