A judge at Jeddah's Summary Court Saturday detained a man for disobeying, neglecting and verbally abusing his mother, until she was “satisfied” he had learnt his lesson. The man was also ordered to pay her a monthly amount of SR2,000 after the judge examined his financial status. During the hearing Sheikh Turki Bin Dhafer Al-Qarni ordered the man cuffed and detained. The mother and daughter pleaded with the judge not to jail or lash him. The judge then asked her to calm down and let her sit with him at the court detention center. The mother, in her fifties, and her daughter filed a complaint with the court stating that her son did not provide for them. He also verbally abused and threw them out of the house. “My son is disobeying me. I need you to advise him and force him to provide for me,” she told the judge. “His father is 70 years old and has had a stroke. I have many illnesses including heart troubles and my son does not fulfill his simplest duties.” The son denied the accusations and started justifying his position. At that point the judge ordered the court policeman to cuff the man and said that he would send him “to detention until your mother is satisfied”. The mother started crying and asked the judge to punish him in some other way rather than imprisonment and lashes. The judge, however, completed the procedures to detain the man and he was taken out of the courtroom. The mother was sent to him at the detention center where she stayed with him for two hours, before she returned to the judge and told him loudly “I pardoned him and I am satisfied with him.” The judge made the man sign an undertaking that he treats his mother well and warned him that the punishment will be harsher if she complains again. The judge also forced him to pay her a monthly allowance of SR2,000. __
