Two of the top pitchers in the National League went head-to-head Wednesday as Clayton Kershaw upstaged Tim Lincecum to give the Los Angeles Dodgers a 1-0 win over the San Francisco Giants. The 23-year-old Kershaw struck out 12 batters over eight innings on the way to earning his 11th win of the season. The two-time Cy Young winner Lincecum went seven innings, striking out seven. Kershaw allowed three hits and just one walk to help the Dodgers snap a string of six consecutive losses to their arch-rivals, and four consecutive defeats overall. All Star Lincecum also gave a good account of himself but made one costly mistake in the seventh inning where Los Angeles catcher Dioner Navarro smacked a solo home run for the game's only run. Phillies 9, Cubs 1: Filling in for one of Philadelphia's four aces, Vance Worley pitched like an All-Star himself. Worley, a rookie, dominated over eight innings, Jimmy Rollins homered from both sides of the plate and the Phillies pounded Ryan Dempster and Chicago on a scorching day at Wrigley Field. Astros 3, Natonals 2: Jason Michaels hit an R.B.I. single in the 11th inning to lift Houston to a win over Washington at home. Padres 14, Marlins 3: Ryan Ludwick and Jesus Guzman both drove in four runs as San Diego routed Florida in Miami. Red Sox 4, Orioles 0: Jacoby Ellsbury hit two solo homers, Andrew Miller and three relievers combined on a two-hitter, and Boston defeated the Orioles in Baltimore. Athletics 7, Tigers 5: Hideki Matsui hit his 500th professional homer and drove in three runs to lead Oakland to a victory in Detroit. Blue Jays 11, Mariners 6: Travis Snider hit a three-run homer, Brandon Morrow won his fifth straight decision and host Toronto extended Seattle's losing streak to 11 games. Twins 7, Indians 5: Danny Valencia singled home the go-ahead run for the second straight day, this time in the eighth inning, and Minnesota beat Cleveland in a sloppy game played on another sweltering day at Target Field. Royals 2, White Sox 1: Sergio Santos threw a wild pitch in the 11th inning that allowed Alex Gordon to score, lifting host Kansas City.
