Sayil, the Saudi terrorist killed after gunning down two border guards in Al-Wadi'a, Najran, last week, attempted to trick his pursuers by raising the “white flag of surrender”. Al-Watan Arabic daily reported sources as saying that after Al-Sayil shot two Border Guard officers he then made the surrender signal, obliging officials to hold their fire. As a Border Guard officer approached Al-Sayil to secure the situation the terrorist swiftly released four shots, at which point the officer's colleagues returned fire, shooting the terrorist dead. The sources told Al-Watan that Al-Sayil, who was killed at “precisely 6.30 Tuesday morning” as he attempted to enter Yemeni territory, showed evidence of “advanced skills and training” in his use of weaponry. Authorities determined earlier that the firearm found in his possession was the same weapon used to attack two security patrols in Buraidah on May 27, 2011, killing one official and injuring another. Al-Sayil had only several months ago been released upon completion of a seven-year prison term for involvement in terrorist activities. According to the Ministry of Interior, he was convicted of setting up militant training camps, supplying arms and personnel to “troubled regions” and involvement in acts of combat. Al-Sayil was first detained on Feb. 17, 2004, and upon his conviction was enrolled in a program to study Islamic behavior based on the Holy Qur'an and the Prophet's Traditions (Sunnah). Relatives told Okaz/Saudi Gazette that he has a brother currently in prison “on similar charges”.
