DAMMAM: The Presidency of Meteorology and Environment (PME) has issued a warning to the Eastern Province residents about the danger of major sandstorms enveloping the region. Strong winds have also hit the region reducing visibility. Fishermen have been warned about going out to sea and motorists have been urged to be careful while driving. In its weather report, the PME said there is a possibility of clouds associated with active surface winds and poor horizontal visibility in the north-west parts of the region. There will be two-meter high waves in the Arabian Gulf. The wind will be more than 55 km per hour, the report said. It said the Frontier Guards are responsible for preventing sea navigation in various governorates because of the differences in the weather in these areas and the large area of more than 77,000 km to be covered. He said severe weather changes in the region have resulted in the Frontier Forces declaring its highest level of emergency alert. Boat owners needing help can call the guards on the emergency telephone number 994. The Health Directorate has announced a state of emergency at all its hospitals and medical centers to receive patients suffering from chest allergies and asthma. A source at King Khaled Airport in Dammam said the dust storms have not affected scheduled flights. The airport has taken all precautionary measures, he said.
