Arvidsson stuns Jankovic

BRUSSELS: Sweden's Sofia Arvidsson upset fourth-seeded Jelena Jankovic of Serbia 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals of the Brussels Open.
Second-seeded Vera Zvonareva was luckier, surviving an early scare to beat Kazakh Galina Voskoboeva 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki opened her bid for the inaugural Brussels Open title by beating American Varvara Lepchenko 6-4, 7-6 (5). In an all-Belgian contest, sixth-seeded Yanina Wickmayer edged 17-year-old qualifier Alison Van Uytvanck 7-6 (2), 6-4.
French Open champion Francesca Schiavone reached the quarterfinals by beating American lucky loser Irina Falconi 6-4, 6-4. She will next play Ayumi Morita of Japan, who edged Casey Dellacqua of Australia 1-6, 6-0, 7-5.
Eighth-seeded Peng Shuai of China beat qualifier Abigail Spears of the United States 6-2, 6-0.
US beats Kazakhstan
The United States secured a 2-1 win over Kazakhstan at the World Team Cup Wednesday when Mardy Fish and John Isner defeated Andrey Golubev and Mikhail Kukushkin 6-3, 7-6 (10).
The victory came after the two singles matches had been shared Tuesday, with Fish beating Golubev and Kukushkin outlasting Sam Querrey. The United States will play Argentina to decide the winner of the Red Group, after the South Americans defeated Sweden 2-1. All four teams in the Blue Group have a 1-1 record. Spain came from behind to beat Germany 2-1, while Serbia defeated Russia 2-1 despite losing Wednesday's doubles.
Ferrer, Berdych in quarters
Top-seeded David Ferrer of Spain and No. 2 Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic advanced to the Open de Nice quarterfinals after winning in straight sets Wednesday.
Ferrer beat Andreas Seppi of Italy 6-3, 6-2, while Berdych won his second-round match against Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 6-1, 6-4.
Ferrer plays fifth-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov in the quarterfinals, after the Ukrainian labored to beat Spanish qualifier Pere Riba 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5). Berdych next plays Ernests Gulbis of Latvia, who beat Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
No. 3 Nicolas Almagro of Spain, a winner of two clay titles already this year, also advanced to the last eight by rallying to a 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-3 win over Carlos Berlocq of Argentina. Almagro next plays countryman Pablo Andujar, who won 6-3, 6-4 against Frenchman Julien Benneteau.
Victor Hanescu of Romania beat Michael Russell of the United States 7-5, 6-2, while lucky loser Robin Haase of the Netherlands advanced after ousting No. 7 Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine 6-2, 6-4.
Bartoli, Petkovic advance
Top-seeded Marion Bartoli of France and No. 2 Andrea Petkovic of Germany both reached the quarterfinals of the Strasbourg International on Wednesday.
Bartoli had a walkover against Britain's Elena Baltacha, and next plays eighth-seeded Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic. Petkovic earlier beat Zhang Shuai of China 6-1, 6-3 to set up a match against No. 5 Maria Kirilenko of Russia.
Kirilenko lost her serve five times before defeating Laura Pous-Tio of Spain 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (5).
Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain had a comfortable 6-2, 6-0 win over Serbia's Bojana Jovanovski. Nadia Petrova of Russia also won, rallying to beat Alize Cornet of France 2-6, 6-2, 6-2. She will next face Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia, who beat Mathilde Johansson of France 6-4, 6-2.
Hradecka beat Stephanie Foretz Gacon 6-2, 6-4 and Mirjana Lucic also advanced to face Medina Garrigues after defeating Jelena Dokic 6-2, 6
