U.S. President Barack Obama's administration wants Congress to provide it with an extra $1.4 billion to deal with an influx of child migrants arriving at the southern border from Central America. The Office of Management and Budget said Monday that the administration anticipates spending roughly $2.28 billion to handle the increasing influx of unaccompanied migrant children being caught trying to cross the Mexican border. The Obama administration had originally asked Congress for $868 million for the Health and Human Services program that handles migrant children. A House of Representatives Appropriations subcommittee voted last week to add $77 million to that request. Unaccompanied children at the border have been on the rise in recent years, and the government estimates finding 60,000 or more children this year.
