Do we represent a sick community?!
Al-Riyadh Editorial
Published in Alriyadh on 18 - 04 - 2014

Rumor, uncertain news and the fat moving false information led a psychologist towards saying that "Half of residents of the Kingdom are psychiatric patents." If we accept such declaration; our schools, houses, streets and clubs should be full of millions of insane people. In this regard, the objection is not related to the declaration itself but to the clear statements issued by some concerned authorities that inform about the abstract reality instead of stating that what is published represents some incidents on which the reality of such sickness can be built.
The same thing applies on other statistics which classify our community as sick, under percentages which source is unknown to us, regarding the increase of diabetes diseases through percentages that exceed the international ones in addition to cancer, Renal Failure, Obesity and other diseases. We accept the fact of that the level of well-being, the change of food pattern and the society's interaction with the expatriates changed some behaviors and led to doubling of the fines related to corrupt food items and expired drugs together with the goods incompatible with the standard specifications, our massive war against the supplier and promoters of drugs and the increase of the various types of crimes. All of these do not make our community a sick one which requires establishing a clinic in each corner, street and neighborhood. It may be that the exaggeration which accompanies such declarations has raised our doubts in regard to such sources and those who promote for them without depending on the logical numbers and statistics which indicate the reality.
It is true that the development of civilization has brought its own diseases. However, we need to recall how Malaria, Smallpox, Leprosy & Tuberculosis had led to widespread death cases in the world before the discovery of medical solutions which led them to an end that made them history while our modern time has brought other diseases which are not epidemic. We represent a part of a world which is affected by the nature of human life regarding to food and behavior due to that separation distances have become terminated by telecommunications, transports and modern discoveries that made the globe similar to a small village. However, adopting the rumor style brought by some good will people led to a reaction that made us doubtful about our public and psychological health. This is not true if we consider the increasing awareness between all levels of the community. In this regard, the view of a man or a woman who are practicing walking in the tracks dedicated for this sport, checking the validity of foodstuffs and their components, avoiding the consumption of many drugs and foods of high calories indicate samples of an advanced national awareness.
Like any other community in the world, we are suffering some ignorance related to public behaviors such as child care, environment safety, exaggeration in hospitality duties, the periodic medical inspection and other aspects about which we still need to deal with our environmental circumference and habits for reaching the level that qualifies us to understand our needs of foodstuffs, drugs, sports practices and other issues.
The level of education has increased, illiteracy has decreased and has reached its minimum levels & number of cultural and health awareness books and publications readers have increased too. Thus, the estimations of those who classify our community as a plague spot are not correct. It is even recognized that the increase of healthy born babies and the care provided to them have led us towards being among a percentage of population that have exceeded most advanced and underdeveloped world countries. Regardless of the effect of this result on the future; we are not witnessing that the numbers of dead or sick people are more than those of healthy ones. On this basis, it is not logical that whoever has some information about psychological or public health or some knowledge about food culture, in addition to him or her who realizes drugs use cases to confirm that we represent a sick community. There is a difference between spreading the awareness through warning from such dangers and exaggerating in the statistics which make us not sure about the news being published as facts. Otherwise, we have to accept them and look for doctors out of our solar system.
