Oil & New Colonialism Return Temptations!
Al-Riyadh Editorial
Published in Alriyadh on 27 - 11 - 2013

During the Gaddafi Era, Libya had been passing through a chronic international conflict, in addition to a problem with the revolution itself.
In spite of Libya's small population who are living on a massive area that can provide them with unified homeland and good living; the past thought mixed with the tribal belongingness and the various devotions and caused the homeland a chronic fever which outlet is unknown as everyone is taking his own decision in between the desert mazes and the historical urban parts.
Lack of security represents one of the serious issues resulted from the emergent events in some Arab Spring countries. It is very similar to the condition of Iraq after disbanding the army and security forces where the various trends street power led by sectarian, tribal & partisan members together with other Islamic extremist powers practiced its domination and left no safe haven except for the Kurdish areas.
The armed disorder consisted of Ansar Al-Sharia (i.e. legitimacy Supporters), Ghaddafi's militias & Al-Qaeda of which some allied with the Libyan tribes led to the ethnic murders & wars in Libya. This is a similar way to the Iraqi scenario. In spite of that Libya is not a state of minorities which are not harmonious; the conditions made the trends of those fighting groups. The Libyan dilemma is that the Libyan army had not been strong enough as Gaddafi had been depending on the his special brigades at the expense of the formal army, in addition to that his control of arms and money kept playing the influential role in his post dictatorship state.
The smell of oil started to reach the noses of the American & British officials together with the rest of European Alliance states as they rushed to apply a rapid intervention for fixing the regime and supporting it & for imposing the democratic system and overthrowing Gaddafi later. At this stage; the picture becomes clear and the wills become revealed to show that these countries are not motivated by their moral values or their nations' saving claims but by the interests and gains. Otherwise, how could laws contradict each other and then meet together in Libya but became precluded and associated with hesitation followed by rejection of intervention in the Syrian case?
It is a wrong practice to evaluate the matters through believing that policies are being set through dependence on good will as this is the last factor that the states put in into consideration. In Libya, the way it had been in Iraq, there have been temptations that pushed the military forces towards surrounding oil wells for protecting them from the disorder. We are realizing that the same old & renewable colonial practice does not vanish through the passage of time as long as geography temptations and their treasures impose the creation of justifications. At this point; we need to understand that this region does not represent a strategic depth for these countries only but a source of various fortunes as well, especially in a country like Libya which deserves the calculated and affordable adventure.
We are against the prevalence of chaos and terrorism. However, if the resources have not been the factor that provided the green light for raiding this country; Ethnic murders through various means wouldn't have been of concern to them. The old and new policies have been built on robbing the fortunes rather than protecting them. India had been called Jewel of the British Crown due to that it has been the source of building Britain through its resources or through exploiting its nation for construction. The return to Libya depends on the same justifications, in spite of that Mr. Obama prohibited his country from entering into any military conflicts and claimed that its last wars are the wars of Afghanistan & Iraq. However, has he did not declare his intervention under any justification; The congress and major monopoly companies would have revolted against him and charged him with wasting a massive opportunity in Libya. In this regard, the standard is that the taboo becomes allowed as long as the interests that determine the roles are present for providing the legislations and breaking the barriers. Libya has been, indeed, the "Soft underbelly" which has been controllable for protecting the interests of the Western two parts of America & Europe.
