Armies that fight its citizens
Published in Alriyadh on 07 - 08 - 2011

The history will fix the development and roles of the Arab armies since its defeat in the war of 1948 against Israel and up to what it is going through of battles against its citizens in Syria, Libya and Yemen and how the roles of this military organizations remained constrained in the non national benefits when the first one among the Syrian generals took a risk by making the first revolt. This model was a tool for other multiple revolts that was managed by foreign embassies for some risk-takers that aimed to manipulate the citizens emotions by declaring shallow slogans, so that the ruling class change with time to be civilian in form with robbing the national benefits, while it acts with the military style concepts that resembled its practices and behaviors.
Those establishments drowned in failing wars when it stood against the western and American armies and got defeated in couple of hours by Israel. The reason is because the establishment of the armies was not professional enough to protect the national benefits and is independent from the civilian policies, but it formed a class that controlled everything. The difference between the generals and soldiers with their leaders is that they remained in the service of the leaders only and their lives didn't change in creating a model of a professional soldier that deals with the advanced machine with what the international armies' styles enforces, and this class-division massively effected the moral values between the two sides of the relation.
The Arab revolutions showed the shallowness of these armies except for the Egyptian army that was not based on a sectarian or division believes, same thing applies for the Tunisian army, where those armies became the authorities support that citizens fight, where the republican army helps the government in its oppression along with the security powers that are spread among the loyalties of tribes and families, in addition to the militias that owe its whole life to the leader and the mutual benefits that they are frightened of getting changed by trialing all of those combination and its elements.
But how does the citizen's mind that reached the understanding of learning and practicing the general life with his small and big family around him as well as a society in which different relations are mixed, how does he change into a killer under the slogan of the conspiracy directed towards his country and ignores the public agreement that protests in all squares and corners of the cities and villages?!
There might be a rebel by the soldiers on their generals, and there might be some drop puts of honorable generals to the revolts, and the bet on time will be for the benefit of the national majority that realized that scarifying for the sake of freedom is a must no matter what are the results and tools of the violent practices.
The authorities in Syria, Libya and Yemen failed to push its citizens to the defeat, and those are examples of revolutions that want to get rid of the life of half a century of their leader's tyranny, and it is not easy, meaning that the sources that country is dependent on, as well as the external support, don't stop the pressure of the current reality and the future when the military machine gets disrupted because of maintenance requirements, oil and spare parts. The motivations of starving the citizens by the failure of paying their salaries, reducing the exports and imports and the expansion of unemployment as well as the general feeling that dying while fighting is equal to dying of hunger, and so the continuity of the fight will not be solved by violence and its justifications because that who freed himself will not hold back in front of a believe he accepted and submitted that it is his freedom tool from the division values among the citizens with misleading names that are no longer valid to be used in the new age and the different generation, both intellectually and behaviorally.
