Saudi Arabia's decision to snap relations with Qatar was not an impetus move, but one based on careful thought and considerations. Saudi Arabia had conclusive evidence of Qatar's declared and undeclared hostility towards the Kingdom. Over the years, such hostility only increased, so much so that Doha began calling for rebellion in the Kingdom. Additionally, Qatar harbors terrorist and sectarian groups whose only aim is to destabilize the security of the region. These reasons for cutting of ties with Qatar were highlighted in a communiqué issued by the Council of Ministers Monday. As one sifts through the communiqué and understands the reasons, one would only wonder why relations were not cut off years ago. The Kingdom's patience and political wisdom is the only answer for this. Saudi Arabia gave due priority to Gulf solidarity particularly at a time when the GCC was in the process of being reorganized from being a ‘cooperation' to a ‘union'. Moreover, Saudi Arabia always championed Arab causes, doing its utmost to maintain cohesion. But when national security is threatened it's a different ball game altogether. No country will ever take such a situation lying down. When matters had come to such a stead that the Kingdom's security was under stress out of Qatar's dubious, covert designs, there was little option left but to end all relations. All peace-loving nations, particularly the USA and the UK, have voiced their support for the Kingdom and have applauded Riyadh as a reliable anti-terror partner. On the other hand, Qatar has been unmasked for its clandestine support for terrorist groups. This dark side of Qatar is what must be addressed and stifled in the interest of peace in the region and the world – and of course for the good of the Qatari people.
