Published in Alriyadh on 16 - 05 - 2017

The United States of America has topped the world countries in receiving Saudi students of King Abdullah Foreign Scholarship Program by 30%, followed by Britain with 15%, Canada 11% and Australia 08%, registering more than 84,000 Saudi males and females on scholarships while the number of the first Saudi student mission to the United States in 1947 was made up of (30) students enrolled at the University of Texas.
The total number of Saudis studying in universities across the United States of America exceeds 125,000 Saudi males and females on scholarships and their companions, as well as students studying at their own expense and staff on scholarships to benefit from the scientific expertise of which the global prestigious universities are full, including the American Universities, supervised by Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission which was established in the United States for more than 60 years.
This move comes as part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's interest, since its inception by the late King Abdulaziz Al Saud, in education as an important pillar of the Saudi human building, so that the leaders of this blessed country have gone on this approach until the current era of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud who has spared no effort to support education and the educated in various disciplines.
So, in the framework of this interest, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz, met during his official visit to the United States of America in 2015 with a gathering of Saudi distinguished students in American universities, as he was keen to meet them though his visit's agenda was very busy, and he was reassured about their conditions, expressing pride of the Kingdom's distinguished students in the educational aspects.
During 2016, King Salman bin Abdulaziz announced launching "Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030" for the purpose of upgrading the performance of all government and private sectors and to achieve sustainable development of the country, from which the "National Transformation Program 2020" emanated.
It is the program whose details were adopted along with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 by the Council of Economic and Development Affairs, chaired by the Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, second Deputy Premier and Defense Minister, and its axes focused on the development of education system, with a budget exceeding SR 24 billion.
For its part, the Ministry of Education presented to the National transformation Program, a number of (36) initiatives for the development of education in its different stages, regulations and entities, including the development of foreign scholarships program and improvement of its operational efficiency with a budget of SR 48 million, according to a national strategy in line with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, confirming the farsightedness the wise leadership enjoys in supporting this nation's citizens as they are the real wealth upon whom a bright future for the country will be built.
The first cultural office to supervise Saudi students in New York was opened in 1951, affiliated by Saudi delegate in the United Nations till 1956 when the Cultural Office became independent and got renamed to " Cultural Saudi Office in New York." Throughout the years, the Cultural Office moved from Houston City in Texas to Washington, D.C. as Cultural Attaché in 1987. 320 clubs were established for Saudi students around 250 cities in 47 united states.
The scholarship program in the United States resulted in more than 200 patents out of which 133 were accredited, 25 of them were in the chemistry, and 108 were in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering.
Scientific indicators show that KSA is one of the leading of the 20 countries in establishing chairs in U.S universities during the last 25 years, the volume grant is ranked third after Japan and Switzerland.
Saudi scholarship started back even before establishing Ministry of Education in 1927, when King Abdulaziz Al Saud formed a committee to study the idea, the committee developed a plan for the scholarship project. It presented the plan to King Abdulaziz which he agreed on, therefore, he sent the first Saudi students to Egypt.
King Abdulaziz Al Saud issued on first of Ramadan,1926 a decree to establish an Educational Department to do its part in opening schools in order to spread knowledge and launching the first institute "Saudi scientific institute" in 1937. Then this Institute prepared Saudi teachers in building modern education.
During the graduation ceremony of the institute's first batch, he said, "You are the outcome of our first Institute, knowledge without work is like a tree without fruit, and knowledge can either do you good or harm you, if you used what you learn it will do you good and if you don't use what you learned it will do you harm, those who got knowledge are not equal to those who don't and know God will bless your knowledge even if it was a little, better than much knowledge with no work, blessing comes with work".
