The recent terrorist attacks aimed at disrupting the redevelopment of Al-Masoura neighborhood in Al-Awamiya, Qatif, in the Eastern Province have not hindered the continuation of work on the project. The project is part of a wider plan to develop the old neighborhoods of Qatif Province. Terrorists have targeted the development plan, as the old, abandoned buildings in these districts are being used by them as safe havens to plan their murderous activities. Confirming the Eastern Province Municipality's determination to go ahead with the project, Mohammed Al-Sufian, the civic body's PR Director and spokesman, said the Al-Masoura district development project includes the demolition of old houses constructed haphazardly in narrow alleys. Al-Sufian said these old buildings were a hazard to residents as they lacked adequate safety features and sanitary services. The residents of Qatif in general and Al-Awamiya in particular, have welcomed the project as a step in the right direction aimed at their wellbeing. The Al-Masoura project is among the most important ones of its kind in the province. It has drawn much interest among planners, with several proposals put forth for the first phase, which includes the demolition of the old structures. The project includes a public market, a designated archaeological area, a cultural center, a public library, a gymnasium, cafeterias and restaurants, a commercial complex, investment buildings, a women's club, kindergarten schools, as well as 610 parking lots. Al-Sufian said the Municipality has been working hard to complete the demolition and removal of debris on time to begin the core activities related to the project. The building owners have been adequately compensated, he said.
