The Saudi government, represented by the Saudi Development Fund, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), signed today memorandum of understanding with a total contribution of USD 5 million to assist more than 25,000 refugees in Jordan through completing the construction of the electrical grid system at the Al-Azraq refugee camp in Jordan. The signing ceremony was held at the headquarters of the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) in Riyadh between H.E. Eng. Yousef bin Ibrahim Al-Bassam, Vice President of the Saudi Development Fund and Managing Director, and Mr. Khaled Khalifa, Regional Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in the Gulf Cooperation Council. Mr. Khalifa expressed his appreciation to the Government of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques under the leadership of King Salman bin Abdul Aziz for this contribution through the SFD, he stated: "This generous contribution reflects the role of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in supporting the humanitarian work in the region and the world. This contribution will focus on developing the electricity network system at the Al-Azraq refugee camp in Jordan. We are confident that this grant will make a positive impact in the living standards of Syrian refugees in Azraq refugee camp". Mr. Khalifa thanked SFD for their continuous support to UNHCR's projects. This project is one of many projects that have been implemented under the framework of cooperation between the two parties, including the project which is currently being implemented to support the Internally Displaced Syrians, as well as projects recently completed to assist the Syrian refugees in Lebanon and Jordan. Total SFD contributions to UNHCR to support refugees and IDPs since 2013 is estimated at approximately USD 30 million.
