Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's interview with the Foreign Affairs magazine has reflected Saudi Arabia's balanced and realistic approach to its strategic policies. The interview was frank and straightforward, spelling out the Kingdom's tactical and strategic objectives Prince Mohammed was forthright about the Kingdom's relations with Iran. He clearly denounced the Iranian policy and its line of political thought, condemning its sinister plots in the region, its expansionist goals, and fragrant interference in the affairs of the Arab and Gulf countries. As a result, it was just not possible to establish relations with a regime whose methodologies are deficient. It was also futile entering into a dialogue with the Iranians as long as they continue to adopt a shortsighted approach without any concern for any future consequences. Prince Salman made this explicitly clear. As for terrorism, Prince Mohammed spoke about the Kingdom's experience in combating terrorism as well as being a victim of it. Saudi Arabia knows very well how to handle terrorism, becoming an important partner in the global war on terror. Saudi Arabia has also shared its anti-terror expertise with other nations who have greatly benefitted from such cooperation and has expressed appreciation to the Kingdom. Fighting terrorism requires strong cooperation among peace-loving countries. Prince Mohammed gave the example of countries like Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan and Turkey who are fully capable of facing terrorist organizations. These terror groups will be rendered ineffective in their scheme to destabilize the region and undermine its security, Prince Mohammed told the publication in clear terms. As regards to Saudi-US relations, particularly after the election of Trump and post-JASTA (Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act), Prince Mohammed said he was confident that the lawmakers would see reason in dealing with the Act. He felt this was possible due to the displeasure expressed throughout the world on the Act as it could lead to a new international system, with a known start and an unknown end. Prince Mohammed was optimistic over the Saudi-US political and economic relations improving, with the restoration of strategic dialogue between the two countries and the participation of the US in the Saudi Vision 2030. This will open up new lines for cooperation between the two countries. The interview undoubtedly reflects the farsighted and realistic approach adopted by the Saudi leadership in formulating its political strategy, in line with its strong global influence and regional leadership.
