The Houla Massacre... Faced with Idleness!
Published in AL HAYAT on 28 - 05 - 2012

How hard it is to write when blood is cheap in a world that lacks decency, chivalry and humanity! How difficult it is to sleep when TVs and newspapers feature bloody reports and pictures of horrendous massacres being carried out against innocent women and children, such as the ones perpetrated by the regime in Damascus! I tried to summon the words which are filled with the pain and the blood shed over the children of Syria targeted by the thugs of the regime last Friday, in a new massacre whose brutality exceeded the Israeli massacres in Deir Yassin, Sabra, Shatila and Qana, but failed. I tried time and again, but failed. Then I tried again, and failed. I apologize to you O readers, but I do not carry a decision or a weapon to support the innocent; I only have my writing.
Through the events in Syria, we learned we had tyrants and murderers surpassing the Israelis' brutality, from ever since they violated Palestine until this day. What we drew from Syria's lessons is that the Arab League is a dead corpse that does not express the will of the people, does not hold the power of decision, and does not have the ability to spur the world to rise to end the bloodshed and support the innocent. We learned that the Arab countries do not care about the killing of children, and that although they do look sad, their sadness is nothing but a single cloud above a barren desert. We learned that some of us kill each other to stay in power, even if the walls of the presidency are stained with blood, and even if the people are dying of hunger and thirst without finding any water or food. We learned that those who deafened us with slogans about resistance and rejectionism are liars and traitors, even our enemies – without any exception. The killing of children, the torture, rape, massacres and mass exterminations are being carried out by the thugs of the regime, to the point where all the children and women have become speechless out of bereavement in the face of the horrific massacres.
My hands shake and I am unable to write when I simultaneously see joyous and terrifying scenes unfolding on the same screen and the same page. One report carries a green picture and another carries red colors draped with blood, and not any blood... That of innocent children! How can one rejoice over the freedom that prevailed over the Egyptian elections, while one's heart is bleeding at funerals, before the sight of coffins and the pleasure derived by the dissolute from the slaughtering of children with knives and the killing of their mothers in cold blood? And where? In Syria, the stronghold of history, peace and cohesion.
Last Friday, Al-Assad's regime committed a massacre in Houla - a village in Homs - to be added to the series of previous massacres in Baba Amr, Daraa and Jisr ash-Shugur, under the eyes of the international observers who are deployed – as it is claimed in Syria – and doing very little.
Damned be this failed world and these weak Arab states that are all talk and no action. Damned be the United Nations and the Security Council that are allowing killing and slaughters to be committed. Damned be the Organization of the Islamic Conference, the Arab League and all the international organizations that claim to care about people, as they watch the daily murders and talk to a criminal regime that is killing the children and shedding people's blood. Decency and compassion have indeed died in the heart of humanity. Who can explain to the world how the United States can remain silent in the face of the killing of children and women, after it has been watching the massacres in Syria for over a year? Damned be Russia, the Baath's partner in the massacres, which licensed the killings perpetrated by the tyrants. Damned be tyrannical China and those dealing with it, as it is sending delegations to Damascus not in order to stop the killing, but rather to justify it and promote it as though it were a product.
One's pulse stops when watching the pictures of dead children on the Arab and foreign news channels, at a time when the Syrian channels and the mouthpieces of the regime praise the steadfastness of the tyrant that has wasted their dignity and killed their own. You close your eyes for a moment to recollect another scene that would bring back hope but you are swept with tears, only to recall that “God is patient but does not forget." How many Hamzas has this regime killed, but how many Hamzas will live on in the hearts of Syria's children?
The solution is easy, O conspiring world that is competing over the killing of the Syrians. All you have to do is allow the arming of the Free Syrian Army, for it to be able to protect the civilians against the claws of the regime and the barbarism of the thugs, and to avenge the martyrs. If this is not done, the regime will continue to carry out retaliatory operations and mass murders, while the Houla massacre will not be the last one, as the Baath knows nothing but the language of violence and brutality, through the killing of children, the disembowelment of women and the hanging of men without any exception. As to the Arab people, they have to rise from their deep slumber and support the Syrian people however they want!!
