“Lebanonizing” the Syrian Crisis
Published in AL HAYAT on 22 - 11 - 2011

With the expanding use of weapons on both ends of the Syrian revolution, and the repeated statements of the Syrian officials about the risks of an external intervention in this crisis on the region as a whole, in addition to talk about “civil war,” which is a matter of concern for the internal Syrian arena as well as the external world, the crisis in Syria is growingly heading to the “lebanonization” road as it carries many of the facets that characterized the Lebanese crisis: proliferation of weapons, accusations of external interference, in addition to the civil war, which lasted for more than a decade and a half.
The strange paradox is that the Syrian officials - who are well acquainted with the dangers of the “lebanonization,”, as they have observed it from afar, and have taken part in all its chapters, at times through finding solutions and mostly through plotting – are currently disregarding the dangerous internal dimension of the crisis in their own country. They are holding the “wars of the others” responsible for the explosion that has taken place in their land. They do know, however, that the invention of this Lebanese term aimed at holding the external interferences into the Lebanese crisis responsible for the war. However, the Syrian interference was at the top of those interferences. This slogan also used to rid the Lebanese people, through a childish naiveté, of their responsibility although they were the real fighters and the real victims in the ambulant massacres that characterized the Lebanese war.
Those “wars of the others” could not have thrived if it wasn't for an inherent defect in the Lebanese structure. This constituted an open wound that allowed for all kinds of infections. In addition, there is another phenomenon that characterized the Lebanese dealing with that crisis and that is currently also characterizing the Syrian dealing as well. This phenomenon consists of claims that coexistence is at its best among all the different religious sects and that this coexistence will shield the country against the dangers of civil war. Minister Walid al-Muallem had reiterated this concept several times during his last press conference, and he stressed on the “awareness of the Syrians” in order to repel the sedition away from their country.
This is a process of organized cheating in order to hide the defects of the internal disease. This method, in politics as well as medicine, is the shortest way to the proliferation of the disease and the repetition of the infection. In dealing with a serious crisis such as the one that Syria is witnessing today, wishes and emotions must come second while the logical and sound analysis of the Syrian society must come first. Every wise man or analyst and any person who is well aware of the real situation in Syria, both at the level of the political and the military leadership, realizes the extent of the defect in the religious distribution and its reflection on the nature of the internal relationships of the sectarian and religious elements of this country. If it wasn't like that, then why the constant talk about the “concern of the minorities” in Syria and its surroundings, if any political change were to take place in Damascus?
The Syrian president had exposed, during his last talk to the British Sunday Times, his preliminary reading of the Syrian crisis: It is a fabricated crisis encouraged by external interference including the Arab and western interference. Regardless of the veracity of Al-Assad's analysis of the objectives of this interference - which according to him aspires to vanquish the Syrian force and positions -, hiding the truth concerning the reality of the internal problem between the sects and constituents of the Syrian society will only lead to aggravating this crisis and to causing it to deteriorate to an un-manageable level: the level of the external interference that the regime is currently complaining about.
The Lebanese precedent constitutes an example to whomever wants to learn.
