Vehicles belonging to the United Nations monitoring mission in Syria were damaged after being hit by an improvised explosive device (IED) near the city of Hama Tuesday, but no U.N. personnel was injured. “UNSMIS [U.N. Supervision Mission in Syria] reports that shortly after 2 p.m. local time today, an UNSMIS convoy of four vehicles was struck by an explosion from an IED near Hama,” U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky told reporters. “Three U.N. vehicles were damaged. No U.N. personnel injured. The mission has sent a patrol team to the area to extract the U.N. military observers,” Nesirky said. It was the second security incident in recent days involving the U.N. monitors in Syria. On Sunday, a bullet struck a U.N. vehicle near the city of Homs. The U.N. reported no injuries among its personnel and said it was unclear who fired at the observers monitoring a month-long ceasefire that has been repeatedly violated.
