The European Union on Friday applied sanctions to the leader of the military junta in GuineaBissau and the heads of its army, navy and air force, saying that they are fueling instability in the west African country, dpa reported. A total of six people were targeted under the first round of restrictive measures the bloc has imposed on GuineaBissau since a military coup on April 12. The sanctions were announced on Thursday, but the people targeted were not identified until Friday. All are now banned from traveling to the EU or accessing any funds they may hold in the bloc. General Antonio Indjai, who leads the junta, has "pressured" the government into appointing him chief of the armed forces, the EU said in its official journal. Also hit with sanctions are the deputy chief of staff of the armed forces, Major General Mamadu Ture; the chiefs of staff of the army, navy and air force; and the lieutenant colonel who has acted as the spokesperson of the military command, Daba Na Walna.
