Divers and rescue workers Tuesday searched frantically for survivors from a capsized ferry on the Brahmaputra River in India's Assam state, with more than 160 feared drowned or missing, dpa reported. The double-decker ferry was carrying 280 passengers when it overturned during a storm in the western district of Dhubri on Monday evening. Some 100 people swam to safety or were rescued. The boat was carrying farmers, fishermen and other residents. During the rescue operations, which continued into Tuesday night, a total of 18 bodies had been found, Assam police chief JN Choudhurysaid, amending the death toll he had put at 40 earlier in the day. -- SPA
