The Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Dr. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu appealed to international human rights institutions and other international community bodies concerned to opt for urgent application of international law and immediately intervene to compel Israel to meet humanitarian demands of Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons. Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons have been waging an open hunger strike in protest against the deterioration of their conditions of detention, torture, humiliation, solitary confinement, denial of family visits and denial of their right to secondary and university education in addition to lack of medical care. In a press statement today, the Secretary-General also expressed concern in particular for the deterioration of the health status of prisoner Taher Hlahlah, who is on a hunger strike for more than two months to protest his continued detention without trial by the authorities of the Israeli occupation.
