Kenyan rangers killed five suspected poachers, while one managed to escape, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) said today. Fifty kilograms of elephant tusks were recovered, along with three AK47 rifles and 15 rounds of ammunition, dpa quoted the KWS as saying in a statement. Two rangers were wounded in the incident, which took place at 1 am (2200 GMT). The shootout between the poachers and rangers lasted about 40 minutes. Kenya is witnessing a recent upsurge in poaching, which largely targets the country's elephant and rhino populations.
