Uganda's top army commander said the country would intervene and side with South Sudan if the worsening border conflict between Juba and Khartoum turns into a full scale war, dpa cited a newspaper report as saying on Friday. Uganda was a traditional ally of the Sudan Peoples' Liberation Movement (SPLM) - now the ruling part in Juba - during the decades of Sudanese civil war. The Daily Monitor newspaper also quoted General Aronda Nyakairima as saying "We will not sit by and do nothing. We will be involved, having suffered a proxy war by Khartoum," Kampala also appears to be concerned that it could be forced to absorb a fresh wave of refugees if the Sudans go to war. In the past two weeks South Sudan and Sudan have seen the worst fighting along their poorly demarcated border since Juba became independent last year. The United Nations and African Union have warned that a "logic of war" is prevailing in the region.
