Malaysian authorities detained 18 Vietnamese fishermen allegedly caught poaching in northern Malaysian waters, dpa quoted state news agency Bernama as saying on Wednesday. Officers of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency confiscated the suspects' two fishing boats and fishing gear estimated to be worth 800,000 ringgit (26,600 dollars). The suspects were arrested Tuesday in the sea off Tok Bali town in the state of Kelantan, about 315 kilometres north of Kuala Lumpur. The fishermen, aged between 17 and 51, could be fined between 100,000 ringgit and 1 million ringgit if found guilty of violating Malaysia's fishery laws, Bernama said.
