U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Monday congratulated the people, government, and political parties in Myanmar on the conduct of elections held Sunday that saw Aung San Suu Kyi elected to parliament. The last time her National League for Democracy (NLD) party won a victory, during a general election in 1990, the then-ruling army junta annulled the results and stayed in power for 21 more years. Ban said the participation of the NLD party “is another significant step towards a better future for Myanmar.” Sunday's elections were for less than 50 vacant seats. The NLD won most of the seats but will wield little power in the current parliament. “The Secretary-General urges the Government and all political forces to cooperate and build on the important achievement of the by-election and to consolidate the country's democratic gains,” Ban's office said. “He also calls on all of Myanmar's stakeholders to redouble their efforts toward genuine national reconciliation and long-term and durable peace.”
