Millions of people in Myanmar voted in a by-election Sunday that could put opposition leader and Nobel peace prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi in parliament. Voting wrapped up at 4:00 p.m (0930 GMT), according to a report of DPA. It is the first election Suu Kyi, 66, has contested, as she was under house arrest during Myanmar's past two general elections in 1990 and 2010. She and 43 members of her National League for Democracy party are contesting 48 seats left vacant when the current pro-military cabinet came to power a year ago. About 6.8 million people were eligible to vote Sunday. Suu Kyi is running for a vacant seat in Kawhmu township, 30 kilometres south of Yangon, where she has registered as a part-time resident although her real home is in Yangon, the former capital.
