Britain's Home Secretary Theresa May said there may need to be border checks along England's northern frontier if Scotland opts for independence, according to AP. May told BBC television on Sunday that new border rules might be introduced if a separate Scotland chose to join Europe's border-free travel zone. Britain is not currently a member of the zone, which critics believe has made it easier for illegal immigrants to cross borders. Scotland is scheduled to hold a referendum on independence before Sept. 2014. May said potential border checks and other issues "should be part of the debate" ahead of the vote. Governments in London and Edinburgh are continuing to discuss details of the independence referendum.
