EU turns the screw on Assad with sanctions on family

European Union foreign ministers turned up the heat on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Friday, extending visa bans and asset freezes to his close relatives, dpa reported.
Sanctions were approved against his British-born wife, Asma, his mother, Anisa Makhlouf, his sister, Bashar al-Assad, and sister-in-law, diplomats in Brussels told dpa.
