The Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu expressed his condemnation and extreme shock for the military coup that took place in Mali yesterday against the President of Mali Ahmed Tomani Toure. The Secretary General stated that the OIC principled position in such cases is to remind of the importance of safeguarding the constitutional legitimacy that comes through elections in Member States, and of solving problems through dialogue. The Secretary General called the coup's leaders to respect democracy and enable the Malian people, at the earliest, to express its free will vis-a-vis the situation in the country, to solve the country's outstanding problems through dialogue, and to fully respect human rights.
