Bob Carr, premier of New South Wales when state capital Sydney hosted the 2000 Olympic Games, was Friday named Australia's foreign minister, according to dpa. Carr takes over from Kevin Rudd, who resigned last week to make what turned out to be an unsuccessful challenge to Prime Minister Julia Gillard for the leadership of the ruling Labor Party. Carr, who served a record 10 years as state premier, will enter the upper house of the federal Parliament as the Labor Party's appointment to a vacancy in the Senate.
