The United Nations Security Council has welcomed the progress reached so far to end the Yemeni crisis, based on the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) initiative and its executive mechanism, confirming its members' commitment towards the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Yemen. In a report, the Yemeni News Agency said the UN Security Council considered the outcome of the GCC initiative to end the Yemeni political impasse a natural product of the peaceful transition of power, calling for holding a fair election in February 2012. After having listened to a report on the situation in Yemen, the UN Security Council reiterated its call for all Yemeni parties to abide by a strict and apparent implementation of the GCC initiative to pave the way for phase II of the political process that would lead to a national dialogue, comprehensive reconciliation and new constitution prior to holding comprehensive elections within a span of two years. However, the Council expressed concern over the latest developments in Yemen, condemning anew the existing incidents of violence and terrorism. The Council called on the United Nations Organization to provide Yemen with humanitarian assistance worth $447 million in 2012.
