NASA officials said Friday that the International Space Station was able to move up and avoid a piece of space debris. According to the officials, debris from an old U.S. private communication satellite would have gotten within five kilometers of the station if it had not moved. Engineers try to give debris plenty of space to pass because it can puncture the space station. The astronauts on the station moved the outpost 305 meters higher, which it would have had to do anyway to receive an upcoming cargo delivery. It is the thirteenth time the station has had to dodge debris since 1998.
