U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Friday that the United States and Myanmar will exchange ambassadors in response to Myanmar freeing political prisoners and making reforms. Myanmar President Thein Sein pardoned and freed hundreds of political detainees Friday, which promoted the move by the United States. U.S. President Barack Obama said in a statement Friday that the move by Sein is a “substantial step forward for democratic reform.” Obama had dispatched Hillary Clinton to Myanmar in December in order to deepen engagement and encourage more openness there.
