Kenya's military on Tuesday reported multiple skirmishes with Somali militant group al-Shabaab, saying more than 40 insurgents and 11 Somali government forces were killed, according to dpa. There was no independent confirmation of the casualties. Kenyan army spokesman Major Emmanuel Chirchir said military jets bombed the strategic town of Afmadow in southern Somalia, killing several militants and destroying military vehicles. He also reported a ground engagement between al-Shabaab and forces of the Somalia government, backed by Kenyan troops, where all of the government's casualties occurred. Kenya sent its military into southern Somalia in October to fightal-Shabaab.
