Field Marshall Hussein Tantawi, Chairman of Egypt's Supreme Military Council appointed Kamal al-Ganzouri as the country's new prime minister on Friday, as protesters vowed to stage a sit-in outside the cabinet building, according to a report of the German Press Agency "DPA". Al-Ganzouri, who had served as prime minister under former president Hosni Mubarak in the 1990s, was appointed "with full powers," reported state television. Al-Ganzouri told a hastily arranged press conference that the leadership of the Council had given him full powers in forming the new government and doing his new job. "The formation of the new government will be dictated by the common good, regardless of political affiliations," he said. He said it was unlikely the government would be in place before parliamentary elections set to begin on Monday.
