Interior Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Mansour al-Turki announced that the Northern Border Guards have managed to arrest a person after getting off a motor-glider carrying a large amount of drugs at dawn on Tuesday. The announcement came in a press conference held here today by Maj. Gen. Al-Turki. The Interior Ministry spokesman said the action began by monitoring the flying body by the border guards when it penetrated the air space at low altitude. The landing site of the flying body was identified at about 10 kilometers north of the international road and west of Alhabbas village. He added that in the beginning, the features of the flying body were not clear because of darkness. Later, it was discovered that it was a two-seater glider. A seat for the driver and the other was placed in it a quantity of drugs including more than 700,000 captagon tablets. At the glider's landing site, the border guards forces detected four cars which tried to draw the attention of guards to distract them from the landing site of the glider. The support security managed to arrest them and all those involved after an exchange of fire with them without causing any injuries. The glider and its cargo were seized in addition to the arrest of 10 people, including one non-Saudi and the rest were Saudis, in connection with this issue and for a series of irregularities related to this crime. He pointed out that the attempt was aimed at overcoming the security arrangements which have been implemented and which are underway. He stated that the security arrangements underway now will be finished along the northern borders by the end of this year. The Spokesman highlighted the Kingdom's efforts in the fight against terrorism and that the deviant group were trying to make passage through which to cross the northern borders for different reasons, but they were not able to do so whether along the northern borders or the other borders of the Kingdom. He said that the security arrangements implemented in the northern borders region is the first phase of the project which is expected to be completed along the rest of the Kingdom's borders after completion of this phase. He stated that these measures aim at preventing any infiltration of the northern borders. The Spokesman noted that the security arrangements in the north of the Kingdom are made up of a security belt inside the Saudi border with a depth of 10 kilometers. It includes a number of natural and metal obstacles. They include three different types of wire fences with heights reaching three meters as well as earth obstacles supported by electronic systems for early warning that consist of a number of techniques, including radar and thermal cameras, explaining that the project will be completed and operated in full early next year. --More
