Palestinian application transmitted to UN Security Council

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon transmitted on Friday the Palestinian application for UN membership to the Security Council.
The application was handed over earlier in the day by President Mahmoud Abbas.
The 15-nation council is headed by Lebanese Ambassador Nawaf Salam, whose country supports Palestinian statehood and UN membership. But the United States has vowed to use its veto power to stop the Palestinian effort in the UN.
