The United Nations on Friday called for Israel to show "regret" for using excessive forces that killed nine people and to compensate families of the dead as a result of its May 2010 commando raid on the relief flotilla bound for Gaza Strip. The 105-page report was released after it was submitted to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. A four-member UN panel, which drew up the report decried "excessive and unreasonable" use of force by Israeli commandos, who killed nine passengers on the Turkish ship, Navi Marmara. Turkey had been demanding compensation for the victims and an official apology from Israel, which refused. The UN report said Israel should make "an appropriate statement of regret in respect of the incident in light of its consequences." "Israel should offer payment for the benefit of the deceased and injured victims and their families, to be administered by the two governments (Turkey and Israel) through a joint trust fund of a sufficient amount to be decided by them," the report was quoted as saying by the German Press Agency "DPA".
