Indian police say at least 40 people have been killed after a truck overturned and fell into a roadside pond in the country's north. Senior police official Brij Lal says the truck was carrying pilgrims traveling to a local temple Monday in Ballia district in Uttar Pradesh state. He says at least 12 people were injured in the accident, according to a report of the Associated Press. He says the truck was carrying more than 60 passengers. He says most of the deaths were due to drowning. Ballia district is about 185 miles (300 kilometers) southeast of the state capital, Lucknow.
