An overnight eruption by Mount Etna on Saturday prompted Italian authorities to close Catania's Fontanarossa airport for several hours, according to dpa. The precautionary measure was taken to avoid problems caused by low visibility at the Sicilian airport. On Friday, shortly before midnight, lava began pouring out of Mount Etna - Europe's largest active volcano - while blasts of hot air from fissures near its summit sent plumes of ash into the sky. Some of the ash later fell on nearby towns, including the outskirts of Catania.By mid-morning Fontanarossa had re-opened.
