Firefighters battled to contain a wildfire that blazed out of control for the second straight day on the Greek holiday island of Corfu Sunday, radio reports said, according to dpa. The fire raged on four fronts near the villages of Skripero and Karakiana. Dozens of firefighters, trucks and four water-bombing planes were involved in the operation to get control over the fire fanned by strong winds, under control. Firemen were also battling to extinguish another blaze that broke out in the area of Paleio Igouminitsa on Greece's western mainland. More than 75 forest fires have broken out in the past 24 hours across the country. A fire that began Thursday on the island of Crete that spread rapidly and caused the evacuation of several villages was brought under control two days later. Greece is often hit by fires during the hot, dry summer months, leading to the destruction of thousands of acres of forest and entire villages in recent years.
