U.S. Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid on Thursday urged Republicans in the House of Representatives who oppose raising the debt ceiling to compromise and said he was willing to listen to their ideas, according to Reuters. The House is to vote on Thursday on a proposal from Speaker John Boehner, a Republican, that calls for a short-term increase in the debt limit before the Aug. 2 deadline. The Senate has a longer-term plan in the works and Reid said he would take suggestions to make it more palatable to Republicans. -- SPA
