UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Monday welcomed the meeting between Myanmar's opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, and a government minister, saying more meetings should take place between the two sides, according to dpa. Suu Kyi met for the first time with Social Welfare Minister U Aung Kyi in the administrative capital of Yangon, and both said they would meet again. "The secretary general encourages such contacts and dialogue ... to build mutual understanding through genuine dialogue," Ban said, adding that the government should take early action to release all political prisoners. Suu Kyi, head of the National League for Democracy, was put under house arrest by the country's military junta for more than 15 years for demanding democratic reform. She was released last year, but her political activities and movement are still restricted. dpa
