A former police chief of the western Mexican state of Michoacan who dodged 2,700 bullets and 10 grenades in a single attack last year said Tuesday that she was happy to return to public service, albeit in a different field, dpa reported. Bautista took a new job Monday, as Michoacan's social policy minister. The state government is facing an election in November, and Bautista will be required to leave the job within seven months. The authorities have blamed the drug cartel La Familia for the April 24, 2010, attack. Bautista's armoured sports utility vehicle was stopped by a truck at night, as she left an official event. Around 20 hitmen threw grenades and shot at the convoy with AK-47 and AR-15 rifles, killing two bodyguards and two civilians, although Bautista herself managed to survive. She stressed that the attack was directly linked to her former job, so she does not think it necessary to have a bodyguard in her new position. -- SPA
