Ash releases from a Chilean volcano led Friday to the cancellation of more flights in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires, according to dpa. Ezeiza and Jorge Newbery airports in the Buenos Aires metropolitan area were not operational, due to a new cloud of ash from the Caulle-Puyehue volcanic cordon, which stretches across the Andes, some 1,600 kilometres away. Argentine media reported that flights could remain grounded until Saturday, based on the data of the Argentine meteorological service. The Caulle erupted on June 4 and the ash cloud that issued from it has since led to numerous flight cancellations across Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Brazil, but also as far away as Australia and New Zealand. In Argentina, the volcano caused serious damage in other fields too, including agriculture and tourism. The authorities fear the deaths of thousands of Patagonian sheep, after their pastures were covered in ash.
