At least 12 people were killed in landslide caused by rainfall in south-eastern Bangladesh on Friday, dpa quoted rescue workers as saying. Police and witnesses said at least 17 people were buried in the landslide in an informal housing settlement in a part of the city of Chittagong, some 300 kilometres south-east of the capital Dhaka. Officials from the fire and civil defence services said 12 bodies were recovered and a search was under way for missing people. The army was called in to support the rescue operation, an official said, adding that three days of persistent rain had caused the mudslide. In June 2007, at least 121 people were killed in a landslide in Chittagong.
